Our Installation Process

Epoxy Garage Floor Installation

The secret to every long-lasting epoxy garage floor lays in the floor preparation. At Garage Upgrade Southampton, we have invested in latest diamond grinders and dustless self-contained vacuum systems to ensure that every floor we coat achieves an unbreakable mechanical bond to the substrate. We have developed a meticulous installation process, that ensures your garage will last years to come without losing its appearance or performance.

01

Diamond grind the concrete floor

Our crew will diamond grind the entire concrete floor surface, which profiles the substrate and opens the pores of the concrete. The edges are ground down using a hand grinder attached to a dust extractor.

02

Crack and chip repair

We fill and repair any cracks, hairlines and salt pits on the floor. Once filled, we grind them down to a perfectly smooth surface, followed by vacuuming the entire floor to remove any remaining dust and debris.

03

Basecoat and decorative flakes

Once the concrete surface is fully prepared, our crew applys a pigmented epoxy base coat to the floor. At this stage we will broadcast the chosen flakes at a 100% coverage for flake floors.

04

Scrape the flakes

Once the flakes are broadcasted and the basecoat is fully cured, our crew will remove all excess flake material. The floor is scraped with a flat metal-edge tool to knock down any standing flakes and make the flake base coat even and smooth. Once the entire floor is scraped it is again blown and vacuumed to remove any debris.

05

Clear, durable epoxy topcoat

We seal our garage floors with a clear UV stable epoxy topcoat, that will protect your new floor from damage, wear and tear, stain, chips and discolouration. It will also make your new resin floor extremely easy to clean and maintain.

06

Sit back and enjoy

Our topcoats require 24 hours to cure before foot traffic can resume and 5 days before vehicles can use the garage again.

01

Diamond grind the concrete

To prepare a garage floor for coating or finishing, our team uses a process called diamond grinding. This involves grinding down the entire surface of the concrete floor to create a profile and open up the pores of the concrete. For the edges and hard-to-reach areas, we use a hand grinder that is attached to a dust extractor to minimize mess and ensure a clean finish.

02

Concrete repair

We meticulously fill and repair any cracks, hairlines, and salt pits before grinding them down to a perfectly smooth concrete surface. We follow up with thorough vacuuming to remove any remaining dust and debris.

03

First coat of epoxy resin

Once the floor is clean, we apply the first coat of high build epoxy resin in your chosen colour. Applying the first coat evenly and thoroughly, we create a smooth and even base layer that will be the foundation for the rest of the coating process.

04

Repair the garage floor again

After the first coat of epoxy resin has cured we return to the repairing stage again. We look for any defects in the surface and repair these with an epoxy resin paste. This allows us to ensure that the surface of your garage floor is completely smooth and even before proceeding with the final coating stage.

05

Second coat of epoxy resin

Finally, we apply the second and final coat of high-build epoxy resin in your chosen colour. Again we apply this evenly and thoroughly, creating a smooth and even finish.

06

Sit back and enjoy

Our high build epoxy requires 24 hours to cure before foot traffic can resume and 5 days before vehicles can use the garage again.

01

Grind the concrete floor

To prepare your garage floor for a new coating, our team uses a process called diamond grinding. This involves grinding down the entire surface of the concrete floor to create a profile and open up the pores of the concrete. We also use a hand grinder with a dust extractor to ensure that the edges are properly smoothed out. This process helps to ensure that the new coating will adhere properly and last for years to come.

02

Garage concrete repair

Our professional team is equipped to handle imperfections, filling and repairing them precisely. Then, once we've achieved a seamless surface, we grind it to perfection and leave no dust or debris behind, thanks to our thorough vacuuming process.

03

Moisture vapor barrier

The team applies a moisture vapor barrier (MVB) primer to the garage concrete floor. This epoxy primer is intended for concrete floors with significant moisture vapor transmission (MVT) issues. Even if the concrete has no moisture problem, the garage floor will still be primed to provide a seal.

04

Apply a base coat

The garage flooring team will apply a metallic 100% solids epoxy color basecoat to the garage floor, providing a solid foundation and a smooth surface for the designer coat to adhere to.

05

Designer Coat

Moving on to the designer coat, we pour various mixed metallic epoxy onto the base coat in ribbons or small puddles, followed by using a squeegee or foam roller to work our way across the floor. We then let it cure and work its magic.

06

Clear sealer

Once the metallic epoxy garage floor is fully cured, we apply a protective coat of clear polyurethane or polyaspartic to finish it off.

07

Sit back and enjoy

Our topcoats require 24 hours to cure before foot traffic can resume and 5 days before vehicles can use the garage again.

01

Diamond grind the concrete floor

To prepare a garage floor for coating or finishing, our team uses a diamond grinding technique to create a fresh clean surface and open up the pores of the concrete. This process involves grinding the entire floor, including the edges, using specialized equipment and a dust extractor to minimize mess and ensure a smooth finish.

02

Repair and patch concrete

Our skilled technicians carefully fill and repair imperfections before smoothing them to perfection through our grinding process. Finally, we finish the job with a thorough vacuuming to ensure your floor is free of dust or debris.

03

Prime the garage floor

The team treats the garage concrete floor with a moisture vapor barrier (MVB) primer. This epoxy primer is specifically formulated for concrete floors with pronounced moisture vapor transmission (MVT) difficulties. The garage floor will be primed to seal it, regardless of whether the concrete has a moisture issue or not.

04

Self smoothing coat

After the MVB primer has fully cured, the next step is applying a self-smoothing 3-component epoxy resin at a 3-4mm thickness. This coat, also referred to as a self-leveling coat, has the ability to flow out evenly and leave a smooth, glass-like finish.

05

Optional PU seal coat

While the seal coat is not required, you may choose to apply a satin or matte polyurethane coat for added protection to your new garage floor.

06

Sit back and enjoy

Our topcoats require 24 hours to cure before foot traffic can resume and 5 days before vehicles can use the garage again.
