Finishes for a Surrey garage floor

Flake: vinyl flakes broadcast to full coverage over a pigmented base coat and sealed with a clear UV-stable topcoat. Textured, forgiving of wet shoes and muddy bikes, and the most popular choice for a family garage.
Solid colour: two coats of high-build epoxy in a single colour for a clean, uniform floor, like the dark grey floor in the timber garage pictured above.
Metallic: metallic pigments worked through the epoxy for a marbled, flowing finish, sealed with polyurethane or polyaspartic. A good fit for a garage that doubles as a gym, games room or car showroom.
Self-smoothing: for home workshops and worn or uneven slabs, a 3–4mm poured epoxy that levels itself into a flat, glass-like surface.

Why grinding matters more than the coating

Most garage floors that fail do so because the coating was rolled onto smooth, dusty concrete it could never grip. Every floor we install starts with diamond grinding the whole slab using dust-extracted machines, edges included, which opens the surface so the epoxy keys into the concrete rather than sitting on top of it. Cracks, holes and pits are filled and ground flush, and where the slab shows signs of damp we apply a moisture vapour barrier primer first.

That preparation is also what stops hot tyre pick-up, where warm tyres lift a weak coating off the floor in the exact spots you park. A DIY garage floor paint from a tin skips the grinding, goes on thin and usually starts peeling within a year or two. A ground and bonded epoxy floor is a different product, not a thicker coat of paint.

How long it takes and when you can park

Day one: the whole slab is ground, repaired and vacuumed clean.
Day one to two: moisture barrier primer where it is needed, then the pigmented base coat and the flake broadcast or metallic layer.
Day two to three: loose flake is scraped and cleared, then the clear topcoat goes on.
Afterwards: light foot traffic after 24 hours, cars back on the floor after 5 days.

A single or double garage is usually two to three days on site. Larger workshops and commercial units in Surrey are surveyed and quoted individually.
